Lansdale PA Chiropractor discusses Ankle Injuries

Ankle pain is often due to an ankle sprain or strain. A sprain is an injury to the ligaments, which connect bones to one another. In most cases of ankle sprain, the ankle is twisted inward, causing small tears in the ligaments. This makes the ankle unstable. The tearing leads to swelling and bruising, making it difficult to bear weight on the joint.

Once an ankle is sprained, the injury may take a few weeks to many months to fully heal. Often, the injured ankle remains a little weaker and less stable than the uninjured one. A proper recovery program can prevent this problem.

Other structures in the ankle that can be damaged and cause pain are tendons (which join muscles to bone), cartilage (which cushions joints), and blood vessels. Adjacent areas can cause pain to be felt in (referred to) the ankle -- these include the foot, lower leg, knee, and even hip. Chiropractic evalution and treatment of ankle injuries can be very effective, and early detection is important.

Chiropractor in North Wales PA Discusses Chiropractic Report

The Foundation for Chiropractic Progress Report, done by the esteemed medical authors Niteesh Choudhry, MD, PHD (Harvard Medical School) and Arnold Milstein, MD, MPH (Mercer health and Benefits), produced these conclusions from the Executive Summary:

Chiropractic care is more effective than other modalities for treating low back and neck pain

Total cost of care per year:

1. For low back pain, chiropractic physician care increases total annual per patient spending by $75 compared to medical physician care

2. For neck pain, chiropractic physician care reduces total annual per patient spending by $302 compared to medical physician care.

When considering effectiveness and cost together, chiropractic physician care for low back and neck pain is highly cost-effective, represents a good value in comparison to medical physician care and to widely accepted cost-effectiveness thresholds. Because we were unable to incorporate savings in drug spending commonly associated with US chiropractic care, our estimate of its comparative cost-effectiveness is likely to be understated.

Pinched Nerves Discussed by Lansdale Chiropractors

What is a pinched nerve, and do I have one? That is a common question for many people with neck pain, back pain, and referral pain. The nerves in the body each have a specific area that they are responsible for, and when these nerves are pressured, or "pinched". the nerve can alter different flow to the muscles and cause pain. The nerve has three main components which can be altered when "pinched", including sensory, motor, and autonomic reflexes. When the sensory component is pressured, it can cause pain, tingling, or loss of sensation. The motor component can lead to loss of strength, or muscle atrophy, where as the autonomic reflex, or knee jerk reflex, would affect the normal reflex reaction of the affected nerve region.
Chiropractic is very effective in resolving pain from a pinched nerve, but early detection is very important. If you are looking for chiropractor in the North Wales area, and think you have the signs and symptoms of a pinched nerve, contact Montgomery County Chiropractic Clinic for a free initial consultation today

orthopedic conditions such as low back pain

Physical therapy and chiropractic can also be be an important part of the care involved in healing both before and after a variety of surgeries and other procedures.

Spinal Decompresion Therapy / Decompression Spinal Therapy

DTS Therapy is an Alternative to Surgery

At our North Wales Chiropractic Center, we believe don't have to live in debilitating pain. Whether you have lower back pain, a pinched nerve, sciatica, neck pain, a herniated or bulging disc, or a variety of symptoms related to damaged or degenerative discs, Spinal Decompression Therapy may be for you.

This gentle,non-surgical therapy can provide lower back pain relief, sciatica pain relief, and is a state-of-the-art therapy for neck pain relief, bulging or degenerative disc disease, and lumbar pain.

The gentle distractive forces of the DTS therapy create a decompression of the spine with unloading due to distraction and proper positioning, to improve blood flow and nutrient exchange to the injured area. You will experience several cycles of stretch and relaxation, which graduates to a peak over a period of several minutes.

Therapy sessions typically last 20-40 minutes, 3 times a week for 1 month, transitioning from passive to active treatments as you respond, with most patients feeling pain relief with as few as 6-10 treatments. Most patients are released from treatment after 8-10 weeks.

A complete program targeting the function of the stabilization muscles is a vital part of Decompression Therapy at Montgomery County Chiropractic Center. Exercise and adjunctive therapies such as kinetic excercises, electrical muscle stimulation, ultrasound, and cold therapy can assist in rehabilitation of these structures. Our goal is to not only help heal the disc, but to also enhance muscular control and support of the back and neck.

Regular home exercise and periodic visits to our office will help in maintaining your spinal health and reduce the probability of reoccurrence. Clinical results of this type of therapy have been effective in over 75% of the patients treated and most patients find long-term relief or effective management of their pain when they complete the entire program of treatments utilizing Spinal Decompression Therapy.

Women Risk Snapped Ligaments for Shoe Fashion

(CNN) -- Despite sprains, foot pains and blisters, towering footwear has legions of loyal female fans.

Among them are pop stars who dance intricate choreography wearing colossal shoes. Lady Gaga wore a pair of staggering 12-inch Alexander McQueen heels in her music video "Bad Romance." The theatrical shoes she wore were unveiled by the late British designer McQueen last fall, prompting some models to decline to walk the runway for him.

"We have entered a moment of heightened impracticality in footwear," said Elizabeth Semmelhack, author of "Heights of Fashion: A History of the Elevated Shoe." Heels tend to get higher during economic recessions, she added.

During the Great Depression in 1930s, the oil crisis in the 1970s, and the dotcom bust heels went higher. Although she's not sure why, Semmelhack said, "it could also be sort of a greater need for escapism."

While high heels elongate legs and make women feel skinnier and taller, they also mean ankle injuries, hammertoes and pain, podiatrists warn.

Doctors know their patients will wear the torturous footwear anyway.

"It's partly why we have a job," said Dr. Martin Alongi, a podiatrist at Beverly Hills Podiatrist in California.

"I just figure women in their 20s are going to do it. If they take care of their feet all the other time, most people can get away with it. There's going to be an occasional person who injures themselves."

There are way to lower the pain quotient on fashion.

Being fashionable doesn't mean wearing the highest heels, said Hal Rubenstein, InStyle Magazine's fashion director. Women have a lot of options this season with platforms, wedges, solid heels and jeweled sandals.

Chiropractic and Headache/Migraine Relief

Chiropractic and Headache/Migraine Relief

Most patients that suffer from headaches or migraines had some sort of traumatic experience in their past, and the musculature of the head, neck and jaw never fully recoved. When these areas become irritated, they send a signal to the brain that there is a problem, which most people refer to as a headache. Whether it was from a motor vehicle accident, a sports injury, a fall at work, or simply a repetutive use activity, headaches can be quite debilitating. Here are some examples of how Chiropractic and Chiropractors can help with headache relief. It is very common for someone who was in an car accident to not see signs and symptoms of headaches until months after the crash, and getting a Chiropractic evaluation as soon as possible can help prevent any long term accident related headaches.

Headaches can originate from chemical such as nicotine, alcohol or allergic reactions, as well as other organic or cardiovascular sources. Once these types have been ruled out, the majority of headache suffers are usually originating from some sort of musculoskeletal condition which never fully healed. Whether its from a car accident, or from countless hours sitting in front of the computer, its important to have the condition evaluated as soon as possible by a Chiropractor.

Dr. Conrad is a licensed Chiropractor in the North Wales / Lansdale PA area who has been trained in Cranial Sacral and Trigger Point Therapy by some of the top Doctors in the country. His patients have seen great success in the relief of headaches, migraines and TMJ problems from musculoskeletal injuries. During the initial consult, your Chiropractor will perform a detailed examination including evaluating the patients' Range of Motion, Deep Tendon Reflexes, as well as an Orthopaedic Examination, a Neurological Examination, a Cardiovascular Examination, and a Musculoskeletal Examination of the neck, shoulders and TMJ region.

Your Chiropractor will then incorporate your health history with any diagnostic testing you had done to determine if you are a candidate for Cranial Sacral Trigger Point Therapy, and which Chiropractic protocol is best suited for you.

Spinal Decompression and Chiropractic

The intervertebral discs are located between each vertebrae in the spinal column. Of the vertebrae, there are 7 cervical (neck), 12 thoracic (mid-back) and 5 lumbar (low back) discs. The discs make up approximately 1/3 of the spinal column. They have three main functions: (1) "Absorb shock" from everyday wear and tear. (2) Allow movement of our spinal column. (3) Separating the vertebrae.

The intervertebral disc is actually a type of cartilaginous joint. Discs consist of an outer layer, annulus fibrosis, and an inner nucleus pulposus, which is a soft, jelly-like, substance. The disc is made up of proteins called collagen and proteoglycans that attract water. Normally, discs compress when pressure is put on them and decompress when the pressure is relieved. These discs do not have a blood supply; therefore, they exchange nutrients by a process called "imbibition". Imagine a sponge filled with water; when that sponge is compressed, the water is forced out of the sponge. When the compressive force is removed, the water is "sucked" back into the sponge. This is precisely how discs stay healthy and functional. Diseased discs can lead to degenerative disc disease that can then lead to: arthritis, herniated discs, bulging discs, facet syndromes, sciatica and spinal stenosis. For more info in discs and disc injuries, visit and click on degeneration to watch the video.

The term "adjustment" refers to the specific manipulation chiropractors apply to vertebrae that have abnormal movement patterns or fail to function normally. The objective of the chiropractic treatment is to reduce the subluxation, which results in an increased range of motion, reduced nerve irritability and improved function.

There are many types of Chiropractic techniques used by Dr. Conrad to relieve stress put upon the vertebral column and its extremities. Some adjustments made by the Dr. Conrad consist of a high velocity, short lever arm thrust applied to a vertebra, which is often accompanied by an audible release of gas (joint cavitation). Some techniques are very gentle, and each technique is catered to that patient's specific prototol. Our patient testimonials on and are a testament to Dr. Conrad's attention to offering the best chiropractic care possible.

The audible sound is caused by the release of oxygen, nitrogen, and carbon dioxide, which releases joint pressure (cavitation). The sensation is usually relieving, though minor discomfort has been reported (that usually lasts for only a short time duration) if the surrounding muscles are in spasm or the patient tenses up during the chiropractic procedure.

There are times when joint cavitation or cracking does not occur and this is often due to either significant muscle splinting or the patient may not be adequately relaxed during the chiropractic procedure. At times like this, it is sometimes best for Dr.Conrad to apply ice, have the patient rest, or do electrical stimulation and massage prior to attempting spinal manipulation.
